This attractive, Grade II-listed barn conversion is in the South Downs National Park. The brief was to convert the 19th-century barn and a former dairy into a single, four-bedroom, family home. A new entrance which is slightly recessed links the two buildings. All the character of the barn was preserved with careful repair and conservation work to its existing timber frame. The exposed beams mean the cathedral-like space a barn can provide is still wholly appreciated. The brick plinth of the exterior walls was restored, new oak timber boarding added and roof repaired and tiled in plain clay tiles. Double-height glazing and occasional rooflights ensure plenty of daylight. New steel-frame windows give an industrial edge complementary to the barn’s form and materials. The traditional brick and flint walls of the dairy have also been sympathetically restored. In addition, a farm office was converted into a separate, two-bedroom, dwelling.
