This contemporary extension has updated a Grade II listed 18th-century house with the addition of a large, open-plan, light-filled, family kitchen-dining-living space.
This was a challenging site in a conservation area with the only opportunity for extension at the rear and into an existing, raised bank.
The siting and scale were also chosen to respect the existing building and its elevations. Designed to be subservient to the main house, the materials – brick and natural oak timber boarding – set the addition apart from the original lime rendered building. Inside the new double-height space, a large amount of glazing draws in natural light while exposed oak beams and steel trusses add character. The original house was completely remodelled, including new heating, plumbing and electrics as well as a new master suite and additional guest en suite.
