Whitway Farm was a scheme for two three-bedroom, two four-bedroom and one five-bedroom house on a brownfield site in the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The one-hectare site, previously industrial units and prior to that a poultry farm, lies in a countryside location outside the settlement area of Burghclere.
The scheme sought to maximise the value of a brownfield site, by the removal of the large, redundant storage buildings and concrete hard standing and their replacement with five sensitively designed dwellings will benefit the local area, boosting the supply of housing.
The houses are of traditional construction with oak frame features, timber clad walls and clay tile roofs. The roofs are a mixture of hips and barn hips while some will have dormers and projecting gable features. The dwellings have generous glazing elements and are orientated to maximise distant countryside views. None are taller than two-storeys to reduce visual impact.
The council’s planning decision report praised the design and use of building materials as “sympathetic to the character and visual amenity of the rural area.”
Pro Vision successfully dealt with concerns, including surface water drainage, trees, layout and ecology.
