Pro Vision Ecology was commissioned to provide an assessment of plans for a single dwelling at Mistletoe Cottage, Ringwood under the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH's) initiative. Our client was keen to achieve Code Level 5 under this scheme and understood the necessity to design ecological enhancement measures into the final plans at the earliest stage in the proposals.
Achieving Level 5 and achieving maximum ecology credits requires designing in and implementing a number of key environmental measures.
The key measures in relation to this site included:
Measures to protect ecological features were required as Mistletoe Cottage is located adjacent to Blashford Lakes SSSI, an important site for overwintering birds. The lakes host up to 5000 wildfowl including gadwall, wigeon, pintail, shoveler, teal, tufted duck, pochard, goldeneye, goosander and coot. Pro Vision Ecology worked with the client to make sure any ecological initiatives proposed would not interfere with the value of the Lakes or prevent the occupants of Mistletoe Cottage from enjoying the views.
Further discussions with the client ensured that the additional measures we recommended were in line with the design of the building and associated landscaping. Ecology proved to be a relatively inexpensive way of gaining the additional 'credits' under the scheme.
