Building work starts on new village store
Building work started earlier this month on a new community store and post office in Preston Candover.
Pro Vision was appointed to design the shop, secure planning permission, provide working drawings and assist throughout the building process. The target opening date is May 2019.
The design is a simple, single storey, timber-clad building with a pitched roof and covered entrance. The stand-alone store is sited next to the village hall with which it will share a car park.
The £220,000 project has followed years of planning, preparation and consultation by the village shop committee. A great deal of effort went into making it an affordable and efficient proposal. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council approved the plans in March 2018.
Community store chairman Richard Walker said: “Today really is a very exciting day for our many supporters and for our committee members. We have been working very hard to make this happen as we all believe that a shop and post office are key to maintaining the vigour and life of the village communities in our area.”
Pro Vision director Scot Masker said: “It has been a pleasure to work with the shop committee and come up with a scheme to meet the needs of this informed and ambitious community. We very much look forward to seeing the new building completed.”
More than half the money needed to build, fit-out, stock and run the new store has been raised through local donations and a share scheme that now has 245 members. Additional funds have come from Hampshire County Council Rural Communities Fund and the National Lottery Awards.
The new store, which will be largely staffed by volunteers, will provide a welcoming place for people to shop to top-up their groceries, post their parcels or meet friends for coffee and cake.
