Rectory Lane was a development of 2 large detached houses near Itchen Abbas, Winchester.
The existing site had an old dairy with redundant farm buildings in poor condition. The narrow lane to the site meant it was unsuitable for the traffic that would be generated by large scale housing or employment development.
The proposals were for a seven and a four bed dwelling that were of a traditional vernacular to sit at ease in the countryside setting. The dwellings were designed to be highly sustainable, energy efficient properties that would achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 5. We worked at marrying the need for this level of energy efficiency with the constraints of working in a sensitive countryside setting, working closely with the client and Local Authority.
The dwellings were screened from the road through enhanced existing vegetation and each had secluded south facing gardens.
The proposals replaced an under-used piece of redundant farmyard. They improved road safety and limited noise and disturbance. The scheme provided high quality, sympathetically designed family homes that contributed towards local housing need.
